VOICE DIALOGUE

Voice Dialogue is a dialogue with our internal voices. Together with the underlying theory of the Psychology of Selves, it was developed in the USA by the married couple of psychologists, Hal & Sidra Stone.

The starting point is that a human being is not composed of one personality, but of several sub-personalities which can be addressed separately. Each sub-personality (or Self) has its own will, thoughts, feelings and, therefore, its own voice. During the journey towards adulthood, some of the present sub-personalities are inclined to develop more strongly than others. A 'team' of Selves is formed with which the individual identifies himself, with which he approaches the world.

These sub-personalities, which were all developed to protect the initial vulnerability of childhood, are called the primary sub-personalities. Throughout his development, the individual 'decides' more or less consciously that a number of sub-personalities does not need to be put to use. These Selves, which are often counterparts of the primary sub-personalities, are called disowned sub-personalities.

The theory provides a rather uncomplicated way of understanding the backgrounds of behavior. The answer to the question why someone reacts the way they do can be found quite often in discovering who (which personality) is in control of that behavior. Is it the perfectionist, the pleaser, the ambitious doer?

I use this methodology very often in coaching and therapy. Simple sessions between me and one of your partial personalities can quickly provide deep insight into the reason why you are, for example, angry so often, or disappointed, or why you 'like' to be the boss, or avoid conflict.
